Electrician Chiswick: EICR for Period Homes

Chiswick is known for its period houses: the red brick homes of Bedford Park, Victorian villas around Turnham Green, Edwardian terraces in Grove Park and riverside cottages at Strand on the Green. Many have been carefully restored, but the wiring behind the walls is often a mix of old and new. This page covers EICRs and electrical work for older homes in W4.

Areas we cover

We work across Chiswick, Bedford Park, Turnham Green, Grove Park, Strand on the Green, Gunnersbury, Chiswick Park and the borders with Acton, Hammersmith and Brentford. Our earlier post on Hounslow and Chiswick covers the wider borough.

Why period homes need a closer look

Older houses have usually been rewired in stages over many decades. During an EICR we often find circuits from different eras joined together, lighting circuits with no earth, and cables run under floors and in lofts that have been disturbed by later building work. An EICR shows you what is there before you plan a renovation, buy a house, or let it out. EICRs start from £100 and the certificate is emailed the same day.

Working carefully in older houses

We lift as few floorboards as possible, avoid damage to original plaster and cornicing, and talk through options such as keeping period style switches while bringing the wiring up to date. Where new downlights are planned, our guide to fire rated downlights explains what to ask for.

What we often find in W4

  • Old consumer units with no RCD protection.
  • Lighting circuits with no earth, feeding metal fittings.
  • Kitchen and loft extensions added on to old circuits.
  • Cellars and garden rooms with unsuitable supplies.
