Electrician Islington and Camden: EICR for Flats and Conversions
Islington and Camden are two of the busiest rental markets in North London, with a huge number of flats in converted Georgian and Victorian houses, mansion blocks and council-built estates. This page covers EICR certificates, consumer unit upgrades and EV chargers for landlords, managing agents and homeowners in both boroughs.
Areas we cover
In Islington we work in Highbury, Holloway, Archway, Tufnell Park, Canonbury, Angel, Barnsbury, Finsbury Park and Clerkenwell. In Camden we cover Kentish Town, Camden Town, Gospel Oak, Belsize Park, Hampstead, West Hampstead, Kilburn, Swiss Cottage and Holborn.
EICR certificates for flats and conversions
Private landlords in England need an EICR at least every five years and before each new tenancy. In a converted house, each flat usually has its own supply, but the landlord supply to the hallway, stairs and smoke alarms needs testing too, and it is often the part that gets missed.
- Price: an EICR in Islington or Camden starts from £100, fixed when you book.
- Turnaround: booking is usually within 48 hours and the certificate is emailed the same day.
- Who: a registered electrical contractor with City & Guilds certified electricians, testing to BS 7671.
What we often find
- Meter cupboards with old boards in shared hallways, sometimes still on rewirable fuses.
- Mixed wiring where a flat has been partly rewired over the years, with older cable still in use.
- Missing RCD protection on sockets and bathroom circuits.
- Kitchen refits in small flats that added sockets onto an existing circuit without a certificate.
If the report is unsatisfactory, landlords have 28 days, or less if the report says so, to have the work done. We quote remedial items at the visit, and many are finished the same day.
Access and timing
Flats in mansion blocks and conversions often need access to a shared meter cupboard or loft. Let us know who holds the keys when you book, and tell your tenant to expect short power cuts during testing.
Consumer units and EV chargers
A consumer unit upgrade clears the most common EICR codes in one job. For the houses and mews properties with off-street parking, we can also check the supply for an EV charger installation.
