Garden and Outdoor Sockets: Safe Wiring for London Homes

An outdoor socket makes life easier for lawnmowers, pressure washers, garden lights and hot tubs, but anything electrical outside has to cope with rain, frost and the odd spade. Badly wired garden power is one of the most common reasons an RCD trips after wet weather, and one of the faults we see most on London EICRs.

What a safe outdoor socket needs

  • A weatherproof enclosure with a suitable IP rating and a lid that closes over the plug while in use.
  • 30mA RCD protection. Every socket that could be used for equipment outdoors must be RCD protected, either at the consumer unit or with an RCD fused spur.
  • The right cable and route. Cable run outside or buried must be suitable for the job, protected where it could be damaged, and buried at a sensible depth with warning tape if it crosses the garden.
  • Sealed entry points where the cable passes through the wall, so water cannot track back inside.

Sheds, garages and garden offices

A shed or garden room usually needs its own supply from the house, often an armoured cable on its own circuit, with a small consumer unit inside the outbuilding. Running an extension lead through a window or a cable clipped along the fence is not safe and will be flagged on an EICR. Garden offices with heaters, computers and lighting need proper sizing, as they can draw as much as a small flat.

What an EICR finds outside

  • Indoor sockets fitted outside in an unsuitable box.
  • No RCD protection on the circuit feeding the garden.
  • Flexible cable buried directly in the ground or run along the fence line.
  • Garden lighting transformers left exposed to the weather.
  • Water damage inside socket boxes that have not been sealed.

If wet weather keeps knocking your power off, our guide to why an RCD keeps tripping explains how to narrow it down.

Car charging outside

A normal outdoor socket is not meant for charging an electric car every night. Long, heavy charging needs a dedicated charge point on its own circuit with the right protection. If you are planning to charge at home, see our EV charger installation page.
