Lighting Upgrades in London Homes: LED, Dimmers and Old Fittings

Swapping old bulbs and fittings for LED is one of the simplest ways to cut electricity use and freshen up a London home. Most swaps are easy, but older dimmers, transformers and light fittings can cause flickering, buzzing or early failures. This guide explains what to check before you upgrade.

Swapping bulbs for LED

For most ceiling pendants and lamps, an LED bulb with the same cap simply replaces the old bulb. Check the colour temperature on the box: warm white suits living rooms and bedrooms, while cooler white suits kitchens and bathrooms. LEDs use far less power and run much cooler than old halogen or incandescent bulbs.

Dimmers and flickering

Older dimmer switches were designed for higher-wattage bulbs. With LEDs, they often cause flicker, buzzing or a light that will not dim smoothly. The fix is usually an LED-compatible dimmer and dimmable LED bulbs. Not all LED bulbs are dimmable, so check the packaging.

Low voltage downlights and transformers

Older kitchen and bathroom downlights often run at low voltage from small transformers hidden in the ceiling. LED replacements may not work properly with the old transformers, and the transformers themselves can fail with age. In many cases it is better to replace the whole fitting with a mains LED downlight, which is also a good moment to make sure it is fire rated where needed. Our guide to fire rated downlights explains when.

Old fittings and missing earths

Older lighting circuits sometimes have no earth wire. Metal light fittings need an earth, so fitting a new metal fitting to an unearthed circuit is not safe. An electrician can test the circuit and advise. Our guide to signs your home needs a rewire covers this and other warning signs.

Bathrooms and outside

Light fittings in bathrooms and outdoors need the right water protection rating for their location. See our guides to bathroom zones and outdoor lighting.
